John Gillespie, CSCS, NSCA-CPT, & Cara Bradley, CSCS, These 2 dynamic presenters operate multiple yoga centers in the Philadelphia and Wilmington, Delaware area. Combined, they bring you over 35 years of strength and conditioning experience. Their yoga centers are filled with athletes of all ages where they offer the Balanced Athlete Program. They also facilitate satellite Balanced Athlete Programs to youth club programs and high school and college teams. Johnny and Cara have trained the Villanova University’s Football, Basketball and Men’s Soccer teams and the University of Delaware’s Football and Men’s Lacrosse teams.

Non-Linear Periodization: From its Physiological Basis to its Implementation William Kraemer, PhD, CSCS, FNSCA

Nonlinear periodization burst upon the scene in the late 1990’s and has now become a viable novel approach to periodization theory. In this presentation, Dr Kraemer will discuss and help attendees learn about the more recent concepts including understanding of the physiological basis for the non-linear approach, when and when not to use it, how to integrate it with classic linear periodization over a macrocycle, and he will give various examples on how to use it including the more dynamic “flexible non-linear periodization” approach so successful in helping strength and conditioning coaches interface with different sport demands and long seasons. Additionally, personal trainers have found this to be important in helping to maintain adherence and excitement in a training program for their clients. Ultimately, this presentation will overview the basic concepts for this aspect of periodization training technology and implementation theory needed for its successful use.

William Kraemer, PhD, CSCS, FNSCA, is professor in the Department of Kinesiology in the Neag School of Education working in the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. He is a NSCA past president and has been honored with the Outstanding Sports Scientist Award in 1992, NSCA's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994, and Educator of the Year in 2002. Dr. Kraemer was honored by the UConn with the Provost Research Excellence Medal. In addition, Dr. Kraemer serves as the current Editor-In-Chief of the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. He has authored and co-authored over 300 manuscripts in the scientific literature related to resistance training physiology and exercise endocrinology.

Maximizing and Periodizing the Various Aspects of Strength for All Levels of Athletes - Absolute, Speed, Reversal, Stabilizing Pete Bommarito, MS, CSCS, USAW

There will be an analysis and specific description of the various aspects of strength. Video and live demonstrations will focus on the primary exercises, their teaching progressions, and variations of the exercises and how they fit into the four main aspects. Supplemental exercises that aid in the overall performance of the exercises will also be shown and discussed. In addition, various periodization models of how to incorporate all four aspects into a successful training program will be illustrated for all levels of athletes (youth, high school, collegiate, professional).

Pete Bommarito, MS, CSCS, USAW, is the Director of Perfect Competition's Athletic Development Center, where he oversees a team of performance, nutritional, and medical/rehabilitation specialists. His responsibilities include training NFL, NHL, NBA, and MLB players and prospects. In addition, he works with many youth, high school, and collegiate athletes and teams. He is also a consultant for many collegiate and high school hockey, football and baseball teams. Prior to developing the vision at Perfect Competition, he has been a strength coach at Ball State University, the International Performance Institute, as well as interned for the Indianapolis Colts.

Real World Fat Loss - Destroying the Dogma Alwyn Cosgrove, CSCS,*D

This presentation will cover the actual science behind fat metabolism and effective fat loss programming. It will also examine and destroy the myths that surround fat loss and shows exactly how to create a fast, effective fat loss training program.

Alwyn Cosgrove, CSCS,*D, is one of the most in-demand and exciting coaches, writers and speakers in the fitness industry today. He is committed to achieving excellence in the field of fitness training and athletic preparation. Specializing in performance enhancement, he has helped countless individuals and athletes reach their goals through sound scientific training. Alwyn has been a featured presenter at several national conferences in the fitness industry and has produced several training manuals and educational DVD's. In addition to being a featured in several national magazines, Alwyn is a columnist for Men’s Fitness magazine and has just completed The New Rules of Lifting.

Theory and Practice of Vibration Training Michael Barnes, MEd, CSCS,*D, NSCA-CPT,*D

Strength and conditioning professionals should become familiar with vibration training as it is a novel method of training that is being used more frequently. Vibration training does not necessarily have definitive and quantifiable loading volumes and intensities as observed with traditional resistance training methods. It is reasonable to believe that individuals respond to vibration exposure in their own individual way. This brief review will assist the practitioner in reviewing some of the current research findings, review some of the applications, and illustrate some fundamental applications of vibration training.

Michael Barnes, MEd, CSCS,*D, NSCA-CPT,*D, is the owner of the Colorado Springs based Infinity Personal Training and Fitness. His previous experience includes working in Division I athletics, the NFL, professional fitness education and now he is focused on the practice of personal training. He holds three of the most respected professional certifications in the industry, as well as a Master’s degree in exercise science. He has traveled the world visiting such countries as Japan, Australia, Puerto Rico, Bermuda, Greece and Denmark educating, training, and interacting with leaders in the fitness industry. He has authored or co-authored many professional articles and several books including his most recent work, Training the 40-Yard Dash.

Plyometric Training Intergration in Athletic Development James Radcliffe, MS

James Radcliffe, MS, is the head strength and conditioning coach at the University of Oregon and has been involved in coaching since 1978. He has been researching plyometric training since 1980, completing a master’s thesis on jump training. In addition to authoring two books and a training video on the subject, he has written numerous articles for the National Strength and Conditioning Association and Training & Conditioning Magazine, as well as for football, basketball, and volleyball coaching journals. He has presented the topic of explosive power training at dozens of major conferences all over the country since 1982.

A Simplified Progression for Teaching the Olympic Movement Sean Waxman, CSCS

Sean Waxman, CSCS, is the president of Pure Strength. He has been developing high-level athletes for over fourteen years. Pulling from his vast experience as a National Level Olympic Weightlifter, graduate student in Kinesiology, and years in the "trenches", Sean has developed training methodologies that continue to help athletes reach their performance goals. His success with high school athletes over the last six years has made him one of the most sought after performance coaches in Southern California.

Improving the Physical Capacities of 12 - 16 Year Olds Clive Brewer, MS, CSCS & Ian Jeffreys, CSCS*D, NSCA-CPT*D

Ian Jeffreys, CSCS*D, NSCA-CPT*D, is a senior lecturer at the University of Glamorgan, and the Proprietor and Performance Director of All-Pro Performance and performance enhancement company based in Brecon Mid Wales. A former professional rugby player, Ian is the author of Total Soccer Fitness and The Coaches Guide to Recovery, and has contributed numerous articles to peer reviewed journals internationally. Ian is the editor of Professional Strength and Conditioning, the UKSCA’s professional journal. He is on the Board of Directors of the UKSCA, as well as being an accredited member, a certification assessor and coach educator with the organisation. He is the strength and conditioning coach to the Welsh Rugby Union national team at Under 16 level, and directs the Talented Athlete development program for Powys. Ian was the 2006 NSCA High School Professional of the year.

Benefits/Risk Analysis of the Weightlifting Movements Allen Hedrick, MA, CSCS*D, Coach Pract, FNSCA

Inclusion of the weightlifting movements, and associated training exercises, has become an area of emphasis in the training programs of athletes from a variety of sports. Despite the increase in the use of this type of training questions persist in regards to both the effectiveness and safety of this form of training. The purpose of this presentation is to look at the benefits weightlifting can provide athletes and then review the literature for the safety/injury rates associated with weightlifting.

Allen Hedrick, MA, CSCS*D, Coach Pract, FNSCA, is the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at the NSCA. In this position Hedrick works with athletes from a variety of sports and also directs the NSCA Weightlifting Club. Previously, he was employed at the United States Air Force Academy. Hedrick has published over 70 articles on a variety of topics related to strength and conditioning, written chapters in two text books, published a book on strength and conditioning for football, and has also produced several DVD’s related to the profession. A former member of the NSCA Board of Directors, Hedrick was named the NSCA Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year in 2003.

Building a Strong Foundation: How to Train the Endurance Athlete in the Gym Carmen Bott, MS, CSCS

From the known determinants of aerobic power performance to the optimization muscle recruitment patterns and blending the training variables into a NEW model of periodization, participants will learn how to prescribe strength training programs that focus on improving neuromuscular efficiency and resistance to overuse injuries for the endurance athlete. Some of the questions answered in this session are: What exactly is “optimal strength” for a marathoner, a triathlete or a road cyclist, even at the recreational level? And, How do we periodize strength work over the off-season, when periodization for endurance performance is, in fact, Inverse?

Carmen Bott, MS, CSCS, is the founder and president of Human Motion.ca Strength & Conditioning Inc. She holds two degrees, a Bachelor's of Human Kinetics and a Master's of Exercise Physiology, focusing on human performance. She is employed as a university level part time as a Kinesiology Instructor in British Columbia, Canada. When she isn't training her clients, she writes for several publications.

Theory and Applications of Recovery Techniques David Sandler, MS, CSCS,*D

David Sandler, MS, CSCS,*D, is Co-Owner and President of StrengthPro Nutrition and its parent company StrengthPro Inc. of Las Vegas, Nevada. He is completing his doctoral degree at the University of Miami where he was the former Assistant Strength Coach and Head of Baseball. He has delivered more than 100 national and international presentations, authored or co-authored 4 books on Strength and Power, and authored or co-authored more than 75 articles in both peer-reviewed and lay publications. He has been a consultant and advisor on Strength and Power for 17 years working with many diverse organizations and client groups.

Back to Basics: A Practical Framework for Coaching and Training Back Health Tracy Fober, MSPT, CSCS

Strength coaches, therapists and trainers work with athletes, patients and clients to prevent back injury and achieve optimal back health, while also facilitating performance. This presentation integrates ideas from physical therapy, athletic development, and the sport of weightlifting into a practical method of teaching awareness, alignment, mobility, and strength. The goal of this session is to arm any rehabilitation or athletic development professional with a conceptual framework and a set of physical literacy tools to effectively train for optimal back health, whether in sport or life

Tracy Fober, MSPT, CSCS, owner of Iron Maven, specializes in physical health and athletic performance. She received her master of science in physical therapy from Washington University in St. Louis and her master of science in kinesiology from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her primary interest is to educate coaches, athletes, parents and other physical therapists on the appropriate application of resistance training techniques for health and performance. Tracy is also a USA Weightlifting certified coach who provides competitive weightlifting athletes and coaches with Dartifsh video analysis.
