Functional training is one of the hottest topics in the strength and conditioning industry. Unfortunately, in recent years some individuals may have unintentionally projected the wrong image of what functional training is by performing exercises that resemble circus acts and label them as “functional”. The purpose of this session is to dispel some of the myths about functional training and discuss the criteria that make exercises functional.

Juan Carlos Santana, MEd, CSCS,*D, FNSCA, is the Director of the Institute of Human Performance in Boca Raton, Florida and the current vice-president for the NSCA. His vast experiences in volunteer positions for the NSCA (Florida State Director, member of the Conference Committee, and Chair of the Sport-Specific Conference Committee) have provided him with an insight into the NSCA that few can claim. Mr. Santana is one of the most dynamic and respected presenters in the industry.

Diane Vives MS, CSCS, *D, is the owner of Vives Training Systems in Austin, TX where she coaches a number of professional and elite level athletes and serves as a member of the Sports Science Committee for the United States Tennis Association. Currently, Diane is a member of the NSCA Board of Directors.

No equipment, no space – NO PROBLEM! In this session the strength and conditioning professional will be exposed to a wide variety of bodyweight training exercises and progressions that can be applied to individuals at any training level.

This session will focus on the utilization of elastic resistance and cable training systems to develop multi-dimensional training programs for clients and athletes of all fitness levels. A wide-array of exercises to improve aerobic conditioning, locomotion balance, upper and lower body functional strength, and core development will be displayed.
