  3. Index Competitions for Athletes

Essentials of Fitness and Performance for High School Physical Education

The program is being offered as a Pilot Program at Castle View High School in Castle Rock, Colorado by Patrick McHenry.

Needs
Students need a physical education program that provides assessment to measure improvement, and teaches proper fitness training principles.

Solutions
The Entry level curriculum will teach NSCA principles for the recommended high school fitness , and nutrition programs and will include an assessment package to measure improvement.

The Intermediate level curriculum will teach NSCA principles for the recommended high school performance program for athletes and will include an assessment package to identify athletic talent.

The Advanced level curriculum will discuss how to design exercise programs, the path to becoming a student member of the NSCA and career opportunities in the strength and conditioning field. Competition in an Index Competition with be included in the curriculum.

Fly Solo Camps for High School Coaches

Certified NSCA Mentors train coaches to demonstrate science-based principles and conditioning lifts, drills, and tests for high schools. The camp process includes reading the online Flight Manual and attending an eight hour Fly Solo Camp.

NSCA National and International Index Competitions

An NSCA Test License is required for athletes to compete in NSCA Index competitions. The license includes the Performance Index and the NSCA Index.

The Performance Index consists of index points for the Vertical Jump, Pro Agility Run, and 10 Yard Dash, which are used to identify athletes with potential in power sports. The Performance Index is also included in the assessment package for the physical education curriculum.

The NSCA Index adds the Hang Clean to the other three tests to make the NSCA Index Competitions exciting. To be assured that coaches have the training to teach the Hang Clean, coaches must be Certified or attend Fly Solo Camp.
