Dear Strength Coach or personal trainer,

We have all faced this issue.

Your athlete can't squat deep with proper form. What do you do?

Do you say "Okay, you can't squat deep so we will need to restrict the range of motion"
Or do you think: "Okay, maybe we have been approaching this in the wrong way. What happens if we try to teach the squat from the bottom up, instead of from the top down?"

If you click on the link you will see a progression that teaches the squat from the bottom up - in my experience a highly effective approach.

The take home message is to teach the most difficult portion of the exercise FIRST, then the rest of the exercise falls into place. Remember to adress flexibility, often a limiting factor in the performance of various movements
