When do you stop a food fight?

Last week’s blog post ended with the following question:
Should we move forward with training an athlete who has not completed the pre-assessment forms that we provided to them?

For each one of us there could be a range of factors that influence whether we move forward with training an athlete/fitness client that has not completed the pre-assessment forms that we have asked for:

  1. If you work for someone else it might not be up to you, if you want to move forward or not with a certain athlete/fitness client.
  2. If you work for yourself or as a contractor in any way, you may choose to pursue the business even though the circumstances might not be ideal.
  3. Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters.” - Albert EinsteinHow does this quote apply to our situation? If you require your athletes/clients to fill out training diaries and they do some of the training on their own, you will want to consider if they will want to fill out those diaries if they were not willing to give you the initial paper work.

A coach, whom I often spoke to when I worked in Denmark, once told a story about his first day at a boarding school.

On his first day at the school an older colleague asked him, “When do you stop a food fight?”

The question was rhetorical, thus the older colleague gave the answer himself.


“You stop the food fight when they throw the first meatball.” 

In some cases a lot of time, a lot of agony and frustration goes into trying to make athletes/clients live up to agreements that have been made.

Sometimes, it might be easier and better for everyone to part early if you and the client are not on the same page.

But on the other hand, working with a problematic client/athlete trying to “turn him” could be a great learning experience!
