High School Strength and Conditioning Coaches
2013 Coaches Conference
For those of you did not make it to the 2013 Coaches
Conference I wanted to give you a brief review.
The HS SIG meeting was held on Friday. There were about 40
coaches who attended. The topics covered were the progress we have made (i.e.
having 2 pre-con sessions and a track at the 2012 National Conference, and a
Youth Special Edition in the works). The Youth symposium was canceled in 2012.
One comment that was brought up about the Youth Symposium was the name. Several
coaches felt that a name change would be beneficial. Many felt that the name
should reflect the training ages (youth / adolescent) and strength &
conditioning. The title of the conference will be review and the information
will be passed along to the national office.
There will be at least one and possibly two pre – con
sessions at the 2013 national conference as well as speakers specific to our
One of the major topics to be discussed was the elimination
of physical education / weight training classes in many states. There are
school districts around the county who are eliminating the Physical education
credit needed to graduate while other states are eliminating physical education
classes all together. A group of high school coaches are working together to
write a paper that will be presented to the board. The paper will urge the NSCA
to reach out to athletic directors and / or administrators so they understand
the importance physical education / weight training is to our youth.
Patrick - Thanks for summarizing the SIG meeting. Our profession at the high school level has the opportunity to flourish. It is our responsibility to be the leading organization in assisting with this process.
