Tom LaFontaine earned his PhD in Exercise Physiology from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1983. He has published nearly 100 articles, eight book chapters, and one full book. LaFontaine is the Head Coach for Older Women on Weights (OWOW), who train and compete in weightlifting and powerlifting. LaFontaine is certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and NSCA Certified Personal Trainer (NSCACPT ), a Clinical Exercise Physiologist through the American Council of Sports Medicine (ACSM), and a Fellow of the ACSM. LaFontaine started the special populations column in the Strength and Conditioning Journal in 1999. He competed in the 1972 Olympic weightlifting trials; won four weightlifting gold medals at the Tournament of Americas in 1972 in Vera Cruz, Mexico; won the national masters long course duathlon championship in 1987 in Palm Springs, CA.
