Dan Perlmutter currently serves as the Director of Sports Performance/Head Olympic Sports Performance Coach at Duke University. He came to Duke in February of 2009 after five years as the Assistant Director of Strength & Conditioning at Harvard University. In his current role, he manages a staff of eight sports performance coaches who train the 24 Blue Devil Olympic sports teams, and he oversees all sports performance training for the Blue Devil baseball and mens soccer programs. Perlmutter has played a pivotal role in the development of over 50 Duke Baseball players who were subsequently drafted by Major League Baseball, and more than 15 Duke Soccer players currently playing in Major League Soccer and multiple professional European soccer leagues. Notable athletes on the Baseball side include first round MLB draft picks Marcus Stroman and Bryce Jarvis, and several other current Big Leaguers such as Joey Loperfido, Matt Mervis, Graham Pauley, and Griffin Conine. On the soccer side, Perlmutter guided training for former New York Red Bulls Captain Sean Davis during his time at Duke, current U.S. Mens National Team and Vancouver Whitecaps striker Brian White, and All-American and Herman Trophy winner Andrew Wenger, who was the top pick in the 2012 MLS draft. He also coached ACC Men's Soccer Offensive Players of the Year for three consecutive years: Thorbjorn Ulfursson (2021), Shakur Mohammed (2022) and Forster Ajago (2023), as well as ACC Goalkeeper of the Year Wessel Speel (2024). During his time in Durham, Duke Olympic sports teams have won numerous ACC and national team and individual championships, and garnered hundreds of All-ACC and All-American awards. Over the years, Perlmutter has worked with several sports on campus, including baseball, mens soccer, womens soccer, fencing, field hockey, mens tennis, womens lacrosse, track and field and volleyball. Perlmutter also oversees staff development for all Olympic Sports Performance coaches and manages the daily operations of the Scott Family Athletics Performance Center training facility. He also serves on several athletic department committees and is an active member of the universitys Hazing Prevention Consortium. He is a consistent advocate for community service projects in Durham, and has worked for many years with the Red Cross, Bright Star Stables. Open Table Ministries, and other local organizations to support those in need in his community. Throughout his career in sports performance, Perlmutter has worked with athletes of all ages and ability levels. His expertise has benefited individuals ranging from youth sports to college athletes, and from professionals to Olympians. Has been featured as a speaker at numerous national, regional, and local conferences, conventions, and workshops. He has contributed to a variety of professional publications, including the Wall Street Journal and Stack Magazine; and he has been a guest on a wide range of podcasts hosted by organizations including the NSCA, REAL-atable, Bridge Athletic, Sorinex, and more. Through speaking opportunities in high school and college classrooms including Dukes Fuqua School of Business and the Doctoral Program in Physical Therapy, he has covered numerous topics spanning athletic performance, collaborative coaching, leadership development, and team building. He has mentored young strength coaches across the country throughout his career, and has spoken regularly at youth leadership academies in North Carolina. Perlmutter holds a Masters degree in Applied Exercise Science from Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. He has been a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) with the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) since 2003, and also holds USA Weighliftings Level 1 Coaching certification. Perlmutter resides in Durham with his wife Amy, and their three children Mia, Kai and Miles.
